🕊 Name: George Perry Floyd Jr.
📅 Date of Death: May 25, 2020
🎂 Age: 46
📍 Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota

Who Was George Floyd?

George Floyd was a father, friend, and son—a man known for his big heart and towering presence. Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and raised in Houston, Texas, Floyd was a former athlete who worked hard to better his life and support his family. Though not a public figure before his death, his life—and his tragic end—sparked a global movement demanding racial justice and police accountability.

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd became a symbol of the systemic racism and brutality that have long plagued communities of color in the United States. His dying words, “I can’t breathe,” became a rallying cry heard around the world.

What Happened to George Floyd?

On that fateful day, George Floyd was accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill at a convenience store. When police arrived, he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground by Officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Despite Floyd’s pleas and the cries of bystanders, Chauvin did not relent. George Floyd died in the street, in broad daylight, with cameras recording the brutal scene.

His death was not just an individual tragedy—it was a breaking point. The footage sparked massive protests across the United States and in countries worldwide, demanding justice and the end of racialized police violence.

The Aftermath & The Global Uprising

George Floyd’s murder ignited the largest civil rights protests in decades. Millions flooded the streets—masked during the COVID-19 pandemic—to say enough is enough. “Black Lives Matter” became more than a slogan; it was a call to action echoed in every corner of the globe.

In April 2021, Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 22.5 years in prison. While the verdict marked a rare moment of accountability, many activists reminded the world that true justice would mean systemic change—not just a single conviction.

A Movement Rekindled

George Floyd’s name is now etched in the struggle for human dignity. His death reignited conversations about policing, racial bias, and the urgent need for reform. Streets, murals, and legislation have been dedicated in his memory—including the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a proposed bill to hold law enforcement accountable and prevent future tragedies.

But the mission continues.
